Melting Essay example -- essays research papers
ââ¬Å"The Great Melting Potâ⬠à à à à à Many times when you live in a certain area you do start to pick up on the other cultures around you. No matter what state you live in there are many cultures blending together. Many people do blend the other cultures of the people around them into their own culture. Iââ¬â¢ve lived in many states and was able to experience this first hand. All my friends have all picked up on the culture around them from wither their family or friends. All the time I see the cultures blending together. Even if you try to keep your own culture, the culture around you just sneaks in and you donââ¬â¢t even realize it. à à à à à Iââ¬â¢ve lived in Texas for more than ten years now; so now I donââ¬â¢t really notice the Mexican culture as I used to. You just drive down any street and can see signs advertising ââ¬Å"Tex-Mexâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Mexican food.â⬠The ââ¬Å"Tex-Mexâ⬠just shows how much we do integrate the Mexican food in our own food. Many of the menus in these restaurants do have Spanish words on them. Even the decors in these restaurants have Spanish influences. You quickly learn what ââ¬Å"El Baà ±oâ⬠means.(bathroom) You even have restaurants like Taco Bell and Taco Cabana being nation wide chains. Most of the towns in Texas have more Mexican food restaurants than any other kind. The Hispanic culture is spreading around the country, for instance, Picante is the number one condiment is the United states. à à à à à Even our school is integra...

Marketing Peter Pan Peanut Butter to Canadian Markets Essay
Many U.S. consumers are not aware that there are many products that are sold in our country but are not available to countries like China or Japan. A lot of products are only for sale in the U.S. and consumers in other countries have to find other ways of obtaining those products. Some products that use to be sold in Canada have now vanished while others have never been available for purchase so many consumers have to order those products online, if possible, or possibly get some family member or friend from the U.S. to buy and ship the product to them. Some Canadians are now surprised to learn that Coca-Cola Vanilla, or Vanilla Coke, is no longer available to purchase in the supermarkets and convenience stores located in Canada. Consumers on both sides of the border and other countries responded well to these products that were launched in 2002 by the Coca Cola Company. Canadians that now want this product will have to stock up the next time they visit the U.S. Meanwhile they may be able to look forward to other products that may reach Canadian markets. As Marketing Manager of ConAgra Foodââ¬â¢s, Peter Pan Peanut Butter, I would like to market this brand available to Canadian markets by using a marketing plan that is the core of the business. The main reason for the marketing plan is that it provides a structured approach that forces the marketing manager to consider all the relevant elements of the planning process which might be missed if a more rushed approach is adopted especially when trying to market a product to foreign markets. Peter Pan Peanut Butter is brand of ConAgra Foods and was named after the J.M. Barrie character debuted in 1928. The brand was originally produced by the Swift & Company that at the time first called the peanut butter, ââ¬Å"E.K. Pond.â⬠Peter Pan PB comes in 10 different varieties which include Creamy, Whipped, Crunchy, Extra Crunchy, Honey Roasted Creamy, Honey Roasted Crunchy, Smart Choice Creamy, Smart Choice Crunchy, Plus 8 (vitamin enriched). Peter Pan has been on the market for many decades and when first packaged, was marketed in a tin can. But because of metal shortages during the second World War, changed its packaging to glass and plastic jars. The productââ¬â¢s tagline of not sticking to the roof of your mouth is one of the reasons, other than it being just plain good, that the Canadians desire Peter Pan so much. The first step in marketing this product to one of the largest Canadian food markets such as The Superstore, Sobeys, Metro, and Safeway, is to analyze the customer value equation. ââ¬Å"Traditionally we think that consumers choose based on the quality of the product, while really the driver of all choice is the non-cognitive relationship that the consumer has with the brand, which is entirely channeled through the brand identity.â⬠(Wegrzyn, 2011). The matter of finding a role of the brand within a consumerââ¬â¢s life comes after the brand identity has accurately addressed how the brand wants to be perceived. The question for prospective buyers in most situations is not whether to make a purchase in the product category, but which product or service to buy. When a productââ¬â¢s price exceeds its value-in-use, the offeringââ¬â¢s net contribution, and inducement to purchase, is negative. The customer is better off not buying the product. Whatever the customer would gain from the product itself is more than offset by what she would have to give up in paying its price. In most situations, however, a very different situation exists. In most situations, the prices charged for products and services fall far below the values-in-use that customers expect to obtain from them. In many cases, because of competition, productsââ¬â¢ use values are in multiples of 5 to 10 times the prices at which they sell. Customers buy products to fill unmet needs and because they expect to derive some value or utility from them. Products provide customers with four types of utility or benefit. These utilities and benefits are time utility, place utility, ownership utility and form utility. What is the time utility or value to the consumer of having Peter Pan Peanut Butter available at any convenient time within supermarkets? The time utility may be of critical importance because many families may depend upon this product to satisfy the needs of small children which may take this product to school for lunch, possibly. So it may be detrimental that it is always available on the shelves by making sure that the production of the product is timely. Secondly, place utility is important. This is the value to a consumer of having the product available in convenient market locations. It may be important that the peanut butter is available at many different supermarkets especially those that are located near schools where there is a high population of children that the product would be in demand to. Ownership utility may not be an important factor for this product as is the value of transferring the productââ¬â¢s ownership. Last is the form utility of the product. Form utility is the value to consumers from changing the composition of the product. The form utility of the peanut butter is also fairly high. Peanut butter isnââ¬â¢t just for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, but is also used in Peanut butter chili, peanut butter broccoli, peanut butter ice cream and peanut butter cocktails. It can be eaten with chocolate, it can be eaten with jam, it can be smeared on chicken, and it can even be used in drinks and it seems that the uses for peanut butter are endless. Peanut butter has been known to be used as an excellent lubricator on rusty old blades, for animal medicine, a butter replacement, mousetrap bait, and price tag removal. When entering foreign markets it is essential to have a clear understanding of the economic conditions of the country in order to properly promote the product in the marketing process so that the development, execution and measure of the campaign for the peanut butter run smoothly. It is important that I visit the target market because on-site, I can talk to potential buyers in order to learn everything that I need to know about competition, local rules and distribution channels. By attending trade shows and events that are specific to the industry within Canada I can learn a lot of helpful information by taking notes on products, competitors, packaging and labeling of similar products. The marketing process can be tedious and stressful in starting the export operations. I will have to make sure that I have an export plan that is similar to a business plan but instead focuses on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that my company can face within foreign markets. My export plan will help me to define my objectives clearly in order to use the right tactics to reach my goals and gain more credibility. My plan states how I can make my product adaptable to Canadian markets and will aid in determining sales price and how much time will be required to mee t my objectives. The best way to enter the Canadian markets is through efficient entry strategies which involve selling directly to end users and foreign retail markets will buy directly from ConAgra Foods. In ConAgraââ¬â¢s consumer goods business, there is no one factor more important than brand awareness. We are aware that if a customer recognizes my brand, they are more likely to buy it which will increase the sales of the product. The product will be shelved on stores according to the popularity among customers or the most sales. The advertising campaign should increase brand awareness amongst some of our other products in order to get better placement in other Canadian markets as well. ââ¬Å"An effective marketing mix also includes market segmentation, targeting and positioning the product for competitive advantage.â⬠(Food Export Association of the Midwest USA and Food Export USA, 2011). ââ¬Å"In international marketing, it may sometimes be useful to see countries as segments. Country level segmentation may be done on levels such as geographyââ¬âbased on the belief that neighboring countries and countries with a particular type of climate or terrain tend to share similarities, demographics or income.â⬠(Pernerm, 2012). Income segmentation can be a bit tricky. This is because relative prices between the U.S. and Canada may differ significantly. This is based upon purchasing power parity that measures which greatly affects the relative cost of imported and domestically produced products. ââ¬Å"Proper execution of these procedures requires quality research and consultation from export assistance providers, export service providers and customers in the foreign market.â⬠(Food Export Association of the Midwest USA and Food Export USA, 2011). ââ¬Å"The Marketing mix and the 4 Pââ¬â¢s are the controllable elements of business.â⬠(Food Export Association of the Midwest USA and Food Export USA, 2011). For instance a company has control over what product it makes, what price it sells the product for, how it wishes to place (distribute) the product and how it wishes to promote it. Introducing new products is a very good way of achieving differentiation and enhancing a retail identity in an over -subscribed retail market, but without corporate support new products may fail or go unnoticed. Because I want to expand Peter Pan, Peanut Butter to Canadian markets I need to perform an environmental analysis at the beginning of the marketing process as well as throughout it. Political and Legal forces, Economic forces, Socio-cultural forces and Technological forces are known as PEST factors of the micro-environment. ââ¬Å"An examination of Canadaââ¬â¢s political orientation and environment is part of the preliminary screening stage of market select.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). I have to carefully study Canadaââ¬â¢s government structure of the Canadian markets and their political system. In addition, I must perform efficient risk assessments because of high levels of uncertainty in terms of continuity of government policies, changing political philosophies that are evident in Canadian markets. Political risk factors are divided into 4 levels, general instability, expropriation, operations, and finance. If any of the levels uncovers risk, which may be deemed unacceptable, the firm should immediately reconsider conducting business within Canada. Barriers of entry will also have to be assessed because it can also be a factor that could possibly make it difficult to break into Canadian markets. Tariff and non-tariff barriers make ââ¬Å"companies already in the market more valuable as they reduce the risk of new competition.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). These ââ¬Å"entry barriers are imposed by governments in order to protect domestic industry or to ensure that companies entering from foreign markets conform to trade relationââ¬â¢s arrangements with other countries.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). ââ¬Å"Barriers to exit are obstacles to market players who realize that they will not turn a profit and would like to quit the market.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). ââ¬Å"From an economic perspective, it makes sense to produce and sell an additional unit of product or service if the revenue generated covers at least for the variable costs.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). Another important variable to consider because of impacts that court of law decisions may have upon a companyââ¬â¢s globalization attempts is its legal environment. ConAgra could face a vast amount of problems in my efforts to develop a successful strategy. ââ¬Å"Understanding the legal environment of target countries is considered of great importance in terms of market selection, due to the detrimental impacts court of law decisions related to issues such as foreign exchange rates, expropriation and intellectual property rights, jurisdiction, patents, trademarks, licensing, antitrust and bribery, etc.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). I will also have to pay close attention to the economic development and performance of Canada. Canadaââ¬â¢s stage of economic growth will have a great impact in my foreign strategies. ââ¬Å"Economic growth affects a countries attitude towards foreign business activity, the demand for goods and the distribution system found within the country.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). ââ¬Å"So, a study of the economic climate is important especially to gain understanding with regard to developing countries and secondly in respect to market potential and market growth.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). ââ¬Å"The existing level of economic development allows the firm to estimate the degree of market potential as well as allowing them to prepare for economic shifts and emerging markets.â⬠(Zekiri & Angelova, 2011). ConAgraââ¬â¢s direct competitors of packaged foods in the U.S.are the H.J. Heinz Company, Mondelez International, Nestl, Tyson Foods, and Smithfield foods. International competitors are Gordon signature, GFS, Markon, and Trade East. Many Canadian brands believe very strongly in marketing that itââ¬â¢s more than simply a service offering. They believe that it starts with a clear understanding of demographics and competitive landscape. Canadian brand managers are experienced, senior level professionals with combined sales and marketing backgrounds across an impressive range of tier-one companies within their industry. But as with most marketers ConAgraââ¬â¢s team has built collectively and individually, vast extended networks of highly specialized and talented marketers. As ComAgraââ¬â¢s landscape continues to change, they are committed to learning, understanding and working in new environments in order to ensure they reach the highest potential for all of their principals. Peanut butter is in 90 percent of households and most families with kids consider it a staple and kid-friendly food.â⬠(Ashman & Beckley, 2006). If you were to ask many people to name their favorite brand of peanut butter you may get a few different answers such as Skippy, Jif and Peter Pan. The product largest consumer base comes from families with children, preschools and K-12 schools. ââ¬Å"While todayââ¬â¢s harried parents can choose from an array of prepackaged lunch options, the classic PB&J remains as convenient as it is healthy and tasty.â⬠(Gidman, 2009). ââ¬Å"This means that the three major peanut butter brandsââ¬âplus several smaller onesââ¬âwill have to employ successful branding to secure a place in the American lunch box.â⬠(Gidmanm, 2009). ââ¬Å"Manufactures are responding to consumersââ¬â¢ hectic lifestyles by creating packaging that assists convenience. Peanut butter comes in squeezable packages, with jelly and as a premade sandwich.â⬠(Ashman & Beckley, 2006). In Peter Panââ¬â¢s advertising campaigns from the 1950ââ¬â¢s they showcased ââ¬Å"Youngsters Prefer Peter Pan Peanut Butterâ⬠within their ad. The advertisement influenced mothers shopping for their children by using a charming little blonde haired boy enjoying a piece of bread covered with peanut butter because the advertising agency knew that showcasing a motherly figure or a mother, would get the mother to associate that child with a child of her own. They also printed the advertisement using calm colors that allowed the viewer of the ad to think relaxing thoughts. Good marketing ethics affect organizational success. Ethics are the principals a person or department uses when making a decision. The truth is, the advertising ad can be a little misleading because just because that little boy in the ad likes that peanut butter, this doesnââ¬â¢t mean that every little child will like it. ââ¬Å"Misleading advertising is a common ethical dilemma. Although regulation provides formal boundaries of what an advertisement can and cannot say, marketers must consider the ethical boundaries.â⬠(Okely, 2009). ââ¬Å"Ethical behavior by the marketing department will make the department and even the company a more attractive place to work as the companyââ¬â¢s good reputation will transfer to its employees. Motivated, proud employees will improve performance.â⬠(Okely, 2009). ââ¬Å"Bad marketing ethics will destroy a good reputations which is arguably much harder to build than sales numbers.â⬠(Okely, 2009). Marketing plans are crucial to marketing managers in providing a more structured approach in marketing products to foreign markets. Market managers specialize in targeting different parts of a customer base to increase demand for a companyââ¬â¢s product or matches customers and different market segments to the products the firm produces. Foreign marketing is a very broad subject is importance to a country and to individual companies. I have examined the broader aspects of international trade in terms of difficulties encountered when trading I foreign markets including how countries are structured in terms of their economic development and some of the worldââ¬â¢s trading blocks. Many problems have also been considered from a companyââ¬â¢s standpoint and in each of the elements of the marketing mix are considered in turn in the context of how it should be manipulated when dealing in foreign markets. My desire to inspire young men and women and make a significant impact on their lives is just one of many reasons I aspire to join your great fraternity. While growing up in a family of primarily my mother and other women relatives, I did not have many positive male role models I could look to for guidance.Although my father was not around to guide me through my journey of becoming a man, I was blessed to have a few good men in my life journey i that embraced me and instilled in me the qualities of a man and gentleman. Not only did they teach the qualities of a man, but they also ingrained in me the importance of an education. Once I left high school, I went on to college, and eventually continued my education at with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science. After I obtained my degree, I began coaching and mentoring the young men at in the New York City area.Being a mentor to those young men was an enlightening experience; it allowed me to understand the importance of a role model. Had it not been for the role models in my life, I'm not sure what direction my life would have taken. It was that experience and the influence of my friends in positive associations s that fueled my desire to change the lives of young men and women the way that they changed mine. I believe that I have a lot to offer Zeta Zeta Chapter, both in terms of my desire to be a positive influence in the lives of others and with my personal strengths as a leader and mentor. As a member of Zeta Zeta Chapter, I will work hard to uphold the reputation and exceed the standards that those before me have set. It is my hope that I will be accepted as a member and be afforded the opportunity to take part in that change. I look forward to being considered for memebership in such lauadable and noble fraternity hearing from you regarding my request to join your great fraternity. Anonymous Sincerely,

Comparing Of mice and men to the hunger games
It's a bit like the Hunger Games as they need ACH other as allies to survive. They would help each other and because Curlers wife knelt down beside him it's like she sees him as one of her own, like they are on the same level power wise. Will return to this image later on in my essay. We have been introduced to Curlers wife as the libertine featherbrain by the males on the ranch ââ¬Å"Jesus what a tramp [George to Leonie]â⬠the boys don't personally know her yet they are all prejudging her of her looks and the way she acts. This shows that the only way she has the power over the men is sexually. Not even Curler takes her seriously. She mess lonely and only wants to talk to the men so that she can relate to them and find a friend. The reason why the men would judge her so much is due to sexual frustration that is caused by her. This could also link back to the sass's as women we meant to just look pretty and pleasure their men. Not only that, they were seen to have no rights to th emselves. They couldn't vote, couldn't go off on their own, they had to marry the first man that asks and do his dirty washing for the rest of their lives. In Of Mice and Men, Curlers wife was viewed as â⬠jail baitâ⬠this basically means that she's a trap that's being fished onto all of the men and trying to catch one unlucky sap to say he forced himself upon her. This could lead to being fired or being lynched. In the sass's all you needed to do was touch a women's dress and she could say you penetrated her and get you lynched in front of the whole town. This shows that the male characters were scared and threatened by Curlers wife due to her power of getting them killed or tortured. You've got to remember that these men were in an all-male society and this one woman comes in and to all these men she comes across like she's purposely sexually frustrating them. This could link back to power as it shows that the men on the ranch are weak when it comes to sexual tension. It c ould show how little they think of themselves. Another way that we know they are sexually closed up or more like insecure. All the males go to a ââ¬ËWhere houseâ⬠at the end of each month. The fact that they go to women who do it for a living and are paid to pleasure the males no matter what they look or are like on the inside. This shows that the males could be shy and insecure about intercourse. It doesn't show much emotion and the girls don't need to personally feel a connection between homeless and the clients. Just think of it like the end of the first hunger games; Jennifer Lawrence established a fake romance with Josh Hucksters to survive. Metaphorically, the prostitutes are Jennifer Lawrence as they are doing whatever they can to survive and it's just so happened that they could only get work in the ââ¬ËHover houseâ⬠.The males are josh Hucksters as they are weak and are supported in some way by the prostitutes. They are supporting the guys on the ranch by lett ing them release all of the sexual anger that builds up due to Curler's wife. The more you hear about it the more it comes clear that the men on the ranch are assumed to been seen as the lowest of normal society's power show. Although most characters have no recognized social power because of their low social class; they all try to absorb the little power each other has.For example; Crooks' nasty strike on Leonie is the best example upon this statement. ââ¬Å"Expose George don't come back no more [Crooks to Leonie)â⬠. Crooks was taking his knowledge and Lien's vulnerability and tried to seem more powerful. They are both outcasts drawn by people who tell them what to do; ââ¬Å"yes ma'amâ⬠Crooks eying this to Curlers wife as it shows that she is the boss over him. Ma'am is used formally as the other guys on the ranch refer to her as ââ¬Å"Curlers wifeâ⬠. This show that Crook is powerless compared to her. She is holding the reins and Crooks is the horse.A horse is se emed to be a free beautiful creature but they are controlled by others showing that they aren't quite the same power as the rider but when they are by themselves they are the most powerful creatures around. This could represent crooks amazing as he is extremely powerful its only the color of his skin that hold him back. Like most colored people in the 1 ass's. Going back to the statement that previously wrote; while Leonie breaks the segregation rule of the sass's Crooks is feeling like it's his right to be the most powerful person in the room.Although he is colored it is also his ââ¬Å"shed houseâ⬠. It was the one place where he could be himself without having the pressure of society on his shoulders. Although you could argue that that Crooks having his own separate ââ¬Å"shed houseâ⬠is automatically reminding people of the society in the 1 ass's, but it is the one place you could see him happy. Compared to all the men living in the bunk souse he is living in a palace! His living conditions are so much better than the bunk house. He gets personal possessions. No one in the bunk house seems to have meaningful possessions but crooks does.Crooks has a whole room all to himself. It gives him some entitlement and a hope for some power. It gives off the power as he is the only person in the ââ¬Å"shed houseâ⬠it will only be disrupted when white people walk into his house. Like Leonie did. He was only fighting for his power like any person would if they felt intimidated in their own home. During the sass's if there was one slight thing rung with you; you would be viewed as an outcast. If you were mentally or physically disabled they would chain you up in a mental institution. If you were colored but mainly black they would lynch you for the color of your skin. You would be looked down on for the special qualities that made you. What IM trying to say is that everyone desperately wanted to fit in to society and be what was observed to be normal. The re are many ways this is translated in the book. Id personally have to say that the best way to show this in the book is the conversation Crooks and Leonie shared when Leonie kook away Crook's privacy when he entered his home; ââ¬Ë ââ¬ËThey II take hay to the booby hatch â⬠¦Tie you up with a collar like a dog' this shows that Steinbeck wanted everyone to know what would happen to the people who were unfortunate enough to be pushed to the bottom of the barrel. Booby hatch refers to a mental institution. Full of people who were looked upon as America's sins. It isn't a very pleasant thing to say but it was honest and that would've been quite lucky for Leonie and even Crooks! If Crooks stepped one foot out of line he would've been lynched for a fact! It goes on about saying hat they will tie him up with a collar like a dog; this gives us the impression of Leonie being pinned down like he has done something wrong. When in fact he hasn't done anything wrong. Once again this also links back to power when you see that dogs are pets, pets are meant to obey their owners. The owners being the powerful one in the situation. Leonie being the metaphoric dog shows that he has no power, he has to be the one to bow down. He is presumed to be the mute of the society on the ranch. In conclusion; people in Of Mice and Men were treated with abuse and prejudice. Most people were/ loud react differently depending on how they were treated; but they had to take it.

Self-Awarness in College
What is Self awareness? It is the ability to read oneââ¬â¢s emotion and recognize their impact while using guts feeling to guide decisions. It includes recognition of our personality, our strengths and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes. Developing self-awareness can help us to recognize when we are stressed or under pressure. It is also often a prerequisite for effective communication and interpersonal relations, as well as for developing empathy for others. Self awareness is the ability to option or choice to choose thoughts being thought rather than simply thinking the thoughts that are stimulated from the accumulative events leading up to the circumstances of the moment. Why is self awareness important? If you want to change your life in any way you need to know yourself before you can act. You need to know what you need to do to head in the right direction and you can't do that until you know yourself. In addition, being self aware will mean that you will be better able to choose a suitable career which will satisfy you. Self awareness can enrich your life because you can move closer to your values and realizing your dreams. Becoming self aware does not mean being selfish though. Elizabeth Bishop Essay
There are many fantastic poets out there today and there were many in the past. One of these many great poets is Elizabeth Bishop. She started writing poems in 1946 and stopped in 1979. Her poems were very imaginative yet serious and sophisticated at the same time. Each poet has their own way to write, and this is hers. Elizabeth Bishop was born on February 8, 1911 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only a few months after Bishop was born, her father passed away and because of this, her mother suffered from a mental breakdown and was admitted into an insane asylum in Nova Scotia until she passed away in 1934. At the age of six Elizabeth Bishop was taken to live with her grandparents back in Worcester. She then began to be frequently ill, so to give her a ââ¬Ëhappier surroundingââ¬â¢, she moved in with her aunt in Boston. At this age, 8, is when she started to read poetry and fairy tales. Walt Whitman and Gerard Manley Hopkins were her favorite and most inspirational poets at the time. As Elizabeth Bishop grew older she started to choose her career path. At the age of 16 she was admitted to a boarding school in Natick, Massachusettes where she read and studied the works of William Shakespeare and English Romantic poets. One year she tried to study music but then realized that she is terrified of recitals so she quickly dropped that dream and she returned to literature. Along with Mary McCarthy and Eleanor Clark, Elizabeth Bishop founded a literary review, this was where Bishopââ¬â¢s very first poem was published. Then later in the Vassar Review, many pieces of her work were being published but during this time her writing skills were affected to a heavy drinking problem. After Bishopââ¬â¢s problem was solved, she went back to creating great poems, with help of the greatest poetic mentor in Bishopââ¬â¢s early years, Marianne Moore. Moore helped Bishop write more poems and write her first volume, North and South(1946), which was chosen for the Houghton Miffl in Poetry Award and contained one of her most anthologized single poems. With lots of money from her many awards and prizes, Bishop went on a vacation to Brazil, here she had allergic attacks that forced her toà unexpectedly stay for several months. Once she was finally cured, she decided to stay and actually lived in Brazil for many years. During her stay there, Elizabeth Bishop fell in love with a wonderful Brazilian woman, her name was Lota de Macedo Soares. The two actually lived together for a while until Soares tragically committed suicide in 1967. In 1955, Bishop published a second book, inside was North and South(1946). This volume was titled Poems: North and South ââ¬â A Cold Spring. There was many poems inside of this book, one of which was ââ¬Å"At the Fishhouses.â⬠Much of the work in this book and after, up until about 1974, was influenced by her life in Brazil. Bishop then had poems and book being published like wildflowers. Elizabeth had some great influence in her life to motivate her in her in the poetic arts. Bishop was greatly influenced by the poet Marianne Moore, who she met when she was introduced by a librarian at Vassar in 1934. There was an inseparable friendship between the two women, remembered by an extensive amount of similarities between the two. Bishop stayed with and used Moore as an influence until Mooreââ¬â¢s death in 1972. Bishopââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"At the Fishhousesâ⬠(1955) contains many references to Mooreââ¬â¢s 1924 poem ââ¬Å"A Grave.â⬠Bishop was also introduced to Robert Lowell through Randall Jarrell in 1947 and the two soon became fantastic friends. But the friendship was curtailed when Lowell died in 1977. After his death, Bishop wrote, ââ¬Å"our friendship, often kept alive through years of separation only by letters, remained constant and affectionate, and I shall always be deeply grateful for itâ⬠. They both were influences for each otherââ¬â¢s poetr y. Lowell mentioned the influence from Bishop in his poem ââ¬Å"Skunk Hourâ⬠which he stated had, ââ¬Å"modeled on Miss Bishopââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËThe Armadillo.'â⬠In another poem, ââ¬Å"The Screamâ⬠, Lowell said is ââ¬Å"derived fromâ⬠¦Bishopââ¬â¢s story In the Village.â⬠ââ¬Å"North Haven,â⬠was one of the very last poems Elizabeth Bishop had published during her lifetime, and it was written as a memorial for Robert Lowell. Unlike her good friend Robert Lowell, who wrote in a Confessional style, while Bishopââ¬â¢s poetry avoids explicit accounts of her personal life and focuses instead with great delicacy on her impressions of the physical world. She uses lots of adjectives, metaphors, and similes to help the reader create a mental image of what is going on at the time. The imagery inà her poems are very specific and realistic sounding. Rhyming wasnââ¬â¢t really used much in Bishopââ¬â¢s poems but was is used sometimes to add emphasis and/or humor. If the poem did have a rhyming scheme it would be different, rather than being every two lines rhyme or every other, Bishop would do every four lines. So the end of the first lines could be ââ¬Å"wharfâ⬠and the last word of the fourth line would rhyme, so for instance ââ¬Å"dwarfâ⬠. She had her own style that made her poems unique. One of Elizabeth Bishopââ¬â¢s poems is A Summerââ¬â¢s Dream. This poem was published in 1959. This poem has a sort of childish tone to it, yet still sounds sophisticated. During the whole poem, Bishop is describing the town that she lives in as well as describing the other residents of the place. In A Summerââ¬â¢s Dream, Elizabeth Bishop is the speaker and speaks in a first person perspective. Throughout the poem, it seems as if Bishop is playing the role of a daughter. She sounds like this because the whole time she is using such descriptive words to put a sense of imagination into each line. The poem shows the the everyday life in her town and it at first seems like she is just telling what she sees. But, as u get to the end you realize that the whole time she was using her creativity and imagination to dream of a town that she would love to live in. The tone used in the poem however, is more sophisticated and sounds like something an adult would say rather than a little g irl. Bishop seems compassionate towards the subject and she makes you feel welcomed into this little town of hers in just 36 lines. Towards her neighbors, or the other characters, there is two different tones. Toward the elder and weaker characters, there seems to be a gentle and sympathetic feeling, while there is a cruel and condescending feel. But these two tones are used in just the right amount that they balance out the negatives and positives to make the poem neutral. Poems contain many poetic devices to help make the writing stronger. Not all of it has to do with the tone and theme of the poem, but with the diction. The diction of a poem is the poetââ¬â¢s choice of words and how they are put together. An abundantly used poetic device in A Summerââ¬â¢s Dream is imagery. Bishop uses imagery throughout her poem to help the reader create an image in their mind of the scenery. She describes her boarding house, ââ¬Å"blue as a makerel, our boarding house was streaked as though it had been cryingâ⬠(14-16), by using these descriptiveà words and metaphors the reader can piece the information together t o create a picture. Elizabeth Bishop uses words like ââ¬Å"saggingâ⬠(1), ââ¬Å"idiotâ⬠(4), and ââ¬Å"shrunkenâ⬠(12) to put a negative and depressing feel to the town of her dreams. In the same poem word such as ââ¬Å"gentleâ⬠(5), ââ¬Å"kindâ⬠(7), and ââ¬Å"extraodinaryâ⬠(17) to give a positive and caring tone. The poet uses both sides together in some cases, ââ¬Å"He was morose, but she was cheerfulâ⬠(29), the poetic devices are used this way to create a sense of neutrality. Over all Bishop wrote many fantastic poems all in her sophisticated yet whimsical way that would spark the interest of many readers and hopefully influence them to do something. They were full of imagery and poetic elements to create a sense of interest to the reader and to also help them to create a mental picture of the actions in the poem at the time. Elizabeth Bishop has received a great amount of recognition and has earned many awards during her career. Each poet has their own way to wr ite, and Elizabethââ¬â¢s poetic ways were very popular and unique but very sadly came to an end in october of 1979 when she passed away of a cerebral aneurism in Boston.
